Let’s Get It in the Budget and Get It Passed!

Last year, Eureka proposed a plan to bring Saint Paul closer to zero waste. This plan included comprehensive composting--prevention education along with curbside collection--as well as switching to single-stream, and adding more plastics to Saint Paul's recycling program.

Update:

The City of Saint Paul has finished their public process of focus groups, surveys, and online forum to hear ideas and recommendations about how to improve recycling and reduce even more waste in Saint Paul. We are waiting for results from this process, and are expecting the Public Works Department to make a recommendation to Mayor Coleman in May of 2013 about what to include in the 2014 budget process. “100 million tons of unlovable plastic: The container-bottom numbers game”

Eureka Recycling currently collects and recycles plastic bottles. Recently, some local recycling programs, including Minneapolis and Hennepin County, have started collecting more types of plastics. In some communities, they are even collecting all plastics. But, recycling isn’t just collection. Are all those plastics really being recycled? Or are they going into the trash somewhere else?

How to Get Really, Really Good Stuff

Stuff: we all have it. We all need it (some of it, anyway). But what about the stuff we don’t want or need anymore? What do we do with it? Right now, consumers and governments are given the responsibility of dealing with it—with no say in how products are made or designed. Your best efforts (and ours) to recycle and compost everything we can will not stop our trash cans from filling up.

However, there are ways to change the way these products are designed and manufactured, and you have the chance to influence the process!

Zero-waste heroes Vonda Vaden and Yogiraj Charles Bates For many months, Yogiraj and Vonda have graced our home page as zero-waste heroes. Both have been deep and active supporters of zero waste and Eureka. We are saddened by the loss of our treasured friend, Yogiraj. We are grateful for the wisdom and inspiration he so freely and generously offered to us and our community. Our thoughts, prayers, and love are surrounding his family and friends, and especially our dear Vonda.
