RECYCLING COLLECTIONS DRIVER

GENERAL DESCRIPTION:
To safely and efficiently perform manual labor in collecting recyclables from residences and buildings in Saint Paul, Lauderdale, Maplewood, Roseville, Arden Hills and Saint Louis Park. Along with recording route data, providing excellent customer service and education materials, hauling to and tipping at the material recovery facility.

JOB RESPONSIBILITIES: 
1.  Operate an International or Hino chassis equipped with a GS or Labrie Top-Select body for the collection of recyclable materials from residential homes and various building locations and transport them for recycling to a material recovery facility (MRF).
2.  Begin workday promptly at 6:30 am and work until all routes are completed.
3.  Follow a scheduled or authorized modified route as required.
4.  Operate a two-way radio to communicate with and receive instructions from a supervisor or dispatcher.
5.  Responsible for performing daily pre-trip and post-trip inspections of vehicle and perform minor maintenance such as monitoring fluid levels, checking for leaks, vehicle lighting, belts, air brake system function, tire pressure and other functions necessary for safe and efficient operation, recording results on Vehicle Condition Reports (VCR’s).
6.  Responsible for washing and cleaning interior of vehicle as required.
7.  Report malfunctions and repair requirements to fleet maintenance personnel and record on VCR.
8.  Tag containers to inform customers of issues involving their set-out of recyclables.
9.  Fill out and turn in driver reports and VCR’s every day, and fill out driver hour logs.
10.  Keep informed of road and weather conditions.
11.  Provide customer service in a professional and respectful manner when dealing with the public.
12.  Responsible for communicating accidents, near misses, incidents and injuries immediately to your supervisor, as well as completing all necessary reports.
13.  Perform other duties as assigned. 
 
QUALIFICATIONS: 
1.  Valid Class B Commercial driver's license with air brake endorsement. 
2.  Clean driving record. Applicants are subject to approval by employer’s insurance company for coverage. Must be 25 years of age or older.
3.  Medical exams are part of the qualification requirements to maintain a Commercial Driver's License.
4.  Pre-employment medical exams and pre-employment mandatory drug testing is required prior to employment. Subject to all DOT requirements for the operation of commercial straight bodied vehicles with a GVW over 26,000 lbs.

EXPERIENCE:
1.  Minimum 1 year driving a Class B commercial vehicle with air brakes.
2.  Experience driving the above on city streets and within residential neighborhoods while making multiple stops, tight turns and/or backing up.
3.  Knowledge of the Twin Cities Metro Area roads.
4.  Residential recycling or garbage collection experience preferred.

SKILLS AND ABILITIES:
1.  Good communication via a two-way radio.
2.  Legible handwriting.
3.  Ability to keep records of relevant route data.
4.  Observe legal and defensive driving practices.
5.  Work courteously and tactfully with customers and employees.
6.  Effective communication skills in English.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

4.  Must drive a vehicle to conduct work.
5.  Must perform heavy physical labor; lifting and carrying heavy objects repeatedly for extended periods of time

7.  Must climb in and out of truck; bending at the waist; reaching overhead, above the shoulders and horizontally; carrying; pushing and pulling. Need to be able to lift 50 pounds repeatedly for extended periods of time
8.  Must have dexterity of hands and fingers to operate a variety of buttons and levers; and use of feet to control pedals on equipment.

PRIMARY PURPOSE:
The Human Resources (HR) Department serves as a link between management and employees.  The HR Generalist’s goal is to assist in fostering positive relationships, increasing job satisfaction, and supporting the organization’s goals.  The HR Generalist assumes the responsibility of many of the day-to-day HR functions and administers human resources policies, procedures and programs. As directed by the Director of Human Resources, the HR Generalist provides support in the following functional areas:  employee relations, training and development, benefits, organizational and staff training and development, recruitment, and assessment and selection of employment candidates.

JOB RESPONSIBILITIES:

  Follows the best practices employment process that identifies, engages and hires the best quality/best fit candidates for employment in a timely, cost-effective manner.

2.  Coordinates the pre-employment interview and selection process, and participates in final decision-making and offer process. Administers an employee start-up and on boarding process that allows new hires to become effective, productive members of the organization in a quick period of time.
3.  Recommends, develops and implements policies and programs that provide a good foundation for employee engagement and clarity. This includes developing and implementing effective and meaningful social and communications programs for all employees.
4.  Participates in the administration of the organization’s benefit programs to include enrollment of and communications with employees and serving as a liaison regarding their group insurance and retirement benefit plans.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

AA degree in business administration, or related field with a human resources specialization and 2 years progressively responsible experience in human resources preferably in a manufacturing or related environment , or equivalent combination of education and experience.

ESL INSTRUCTOR

PRIMARY PURPOSE:
This position is responsible for providing on-site ESL instruction to Eureka Recycling’s employees whose primary language is Spanish.  The ESL Instructor will assess each employee’s proficiency with the English language, and assign each to different proficiency groups.   

JOB RESPONSIBILITIES:
1.  Provide ESL instruction to staff members whose primary language is Spanish.
2.  Assess English proficiency levels for each student, and organize students into different groups relating to these proficiency levels.

1.  Gathers data and enters information to mainframe computer to support the Operations and Customer Relations Departments.  This will include customer service reports and such information as missed pickups, special pickup information, etc.
2.  Provide administrative support to Director of Operations and Scale Office Manager including data entry, word processing, and creating spreadsheets to track information.
3.  Serves as part-time receptionist as directed.

INTERNSHIPS AT EUREKA RECYCLING

Eureka Recycling has an organization-wide commitment to hosting interns. Our board, presidents, and staff recognize the enthusiasm, talent, and results that interns bring to our organization and are dedicated to providing students with meaningful work experience. We have hosted 49 interns since 2000. Our internship program is overseen by a designated staff person and includes a formal orientation and training, written workplans, mid-internships meetings with other interns, exit interviews, and evaluations with interns. Our internship program is grounded in a project-based model in which our intern workplans are centered on meaningful projects that directly impact the work of our organization.

Eureka Recycling began a comprehensive commercial composting and recycling program in 2008, and works with Minneapolis restaurants, co-ops and other businesses to reduce their waste and their carbon footprints, and to support them in sharing the impact of their efforts with their employees and customers.

DESCRIPTION:
Eureka Recycling is seeking a self-motivated, flexible, and organized individual to support the development of our commercial composting program. The primary role of this position will be to gather information and observe composting programs in action at our composting partners’ businesses, including Minneapolis restaurants and co-ops, the Mill City Farmers Market, and other businesses. The information gathered by this intern through site visits, conversations with business owners and managers, and observation will be used to give our commercial composting team further insights into the unique challenges of setting up and maintaining composting in each situation, and will be used to strengthen and develop the program’s customer relations strategies and ensure that we can effectively meet the needs of our composting partners. This intern will also spend time in the office doing research and compiling information related to the program, assisting with program analysis, and making recommendations. This intern will see first hand how Eureka Recycling works to achieve its mission to reduce waste through entrepreneurial projects that engagement with the community. This internship is ideal for someone who is seeking a deeper understanding of how businesses can implement composting as part of a waste-reduction strategy that lowers their carbon footprint and engages and educates both staff and customers. 

RESPONSIBILITES:
1.  Visit restaurants, co-ops, grocery stores, and other businesses who are participating in Eureka Recycling’s composting program. Survey business owners or managers about their experience in the program, gather feedback, take photos, etc.
2.  Track all information gathered from site visits, and assist Eureka Recycling staff in following up on questions and requests generated in conversations with business owners when appropriate.
3.  Assist in the continued development of customer relations resources and procedures for the commercial composting program based on the questions and feedback generated by visiting the composting businesses.
4.  Perform general office duties (photocopying, assemble handouts, data entry, assist with mailings) as needed to complete above responsibilities and support the program.
5.  Assist with research and special projects as assigned, which may include completing research on a topic related to composting, assisting with a zero-waste event, and participating in sorting waste to help identify ways to reduce waste and increase recycling.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
1.  Excellent interpersonal skills with demonstrated oral and written communication ability.
2.  Effective planning, tracking, observation, and record keeping skills.
3.  Ability to gather information through observations, conversations, and research and to present it in an organized and concise format.
4.  Ability to interact respectfully with diverse groups of people in a variety of settings, and engage them in meaningful conversations about waste reduction, composting and recycling.
5.  Demonstrated ability to organize and prioritize projects and meet deadlines.
6.  Ability to work independently and carry out workplan items that are developed in collaborative team setting.

DESCRIPTION:
Eureka Recycling is a community based organization that values the importance of building and maintaining relationships with large and diverse groups of people and organizations. In order to effectively maintain these relationships, communicate the necessary messages, and engage the community and our partners, we have contact lists that require organization and updating. This intern will work with the communications team to gather current contact information, help identify potential partners, such as elected officials, media outlets, environmental organizations and community groups to connect with, as well as manage vital informational lists that are used for the curbside and apartment recycling programs, advocacy and policy work, and cross departmental education, outreach and program work. Additional responsibilities will include community outreach to engage our contacts and partners, and assistance in producing our yearly Guide to Recycling mailing to all residents in our curbside recycling program.

Eureka Recycling is seeking an organized, detail-oriented individual with strong communication skills to provide assistance to the communications department staff. This internship is ideal for a person who is interested in helping with the behind the scenes processes to engage and inform important political and community groups, as well as individuals, the media, and recyclers in order to further Eureka Recycling’s zero-waste mission.

RESPONSIBILITIES
1.  Assist in the production of the Guide to Recycling, which will include facilitating internal communication and gathering feedback about the mailing, organizing and updating mailing lists and developing an archive for past Guides.
2.  Work with city contacts (predominately from the City of Maplewood) to obtain mailing list information. Make recommendations for the necessary onsite research to verify mailing addresses. Conduct onsite research.
3.  Work with various teams to develop up-to-date, complete contact lists for various projects and programs. This intern will have a prioritized “list of lists” to work on throughout the internship.
4.  Conduct internet and phone research to complete contact lists. Develop systems to organize information. Work with all staff to obtain and catalog new contacts in contact lists.
5.  Under the direction of the communication managers, use the completed contact lists to disseminate information to engage and inform our constituents on various programs and topics. Learn and use email newsletter software.
6.  Make recommendations for organizing data in Eureka Recycling’s contact management database, based on experience working with contact lists.
7.  Perform general office duties (filing, data entry, mailings, photocopies, etc.) as needed to complete above responsibilities.
8.  Attend staff trainings on recycling issues when possible.
9.  Assist with special projects as needed, which may include assisting with event preparation and monitoring for at least one zero-waste event and participating in sorting waste to help identify ways to reduce waste and increase recycling.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
1.  Computer skills: proficiency in Microsoft Word, Excel, and Internet (Outlook).

(No graphic design, database, or web development software knowledge is necessary.)
2.  Excellent attention to detail.
3.  Demonstrated organization skills. Ability to prioritize and meet deadlines.

Eureka Recycling is seeking an energetic, assertive, and articulate individual. This entry-level internship is ideal for someone looking to gain experience working in a nonprofit organization and is interested in learning more about recycling, environmental issues, speech and/or communications.

DESCRIPTION:
The customer relations team is responsible for building and maintaining relationships with all of Eureka Recycling’s partners, including residents, cities, counties and other businesses and organizations. The Customer Relations Intern will provide support for this team by assisting staff in a variety of tasks in order to meet their objectives and by coordinating projects at the administrative level. This intern will greatly assist customer relations staff in developing procedural and operational efficiencies in the management of various aspects of the curbside, multifamily and commercial recycling programs. This intern will work closely with the Zero Waste Education Coordinator to assist in analysis of customer service issues and outline a system for electronically tracking issues and responses. This intern will also be fully trained in recycling methods and application of the best practices that apply to recycling in multifamily (apartment) buildings based on the 2004 study and Multifamily Toolkit produced by Eureka Recycling. This intern will help to analyze Eureka Recycling’s multifamily recycling program in order to identify outreach needs for owners, managers, and residents in apartment buildings, condominiums, and town homes. By having direct contact with the public, this intern will provide excellent customer service and increase awareness of the various aspects of what makes recycling successful for buildings.

RESPONSIBILITIES:
1.  Complete training and understand basic administrative procedures for tracking and responding to various customer service issues.
2.  Aid in the development of an electronic tracking system for customer service issues pertaining to recycling collections.
3.  Complete training and learn how to implement a multifamily recycling program with applications specific to Saint Paul’s program.
4.  Work with the Zero Waste Education Coordinator to analyze information about apartment buildings and choose buildings to target with outreach or needs for updates.
5.  Work with the Zero Waste Education Coordinator to adjust logistics of service (cart numbers and frequency of service) and recycling needs based on building performance.
6.  Fill requests for education materials such as posters and flyers.
7.  Work with the Zero Waste Education Coordinator to make presentations at apartment buildings, townhouse associations and other public events to educate and inspire residents about waste reduction and recycling.
8.  Work with the Zero Waste Education Coordinator to make calls to property management in order to update contacts and files.
9.  Assist with office and administrative tasks as needed to complete above responsibilities.
10.  Support customer relations staff by updating internal resources and information.
11.  Participate in sorting waste to help identify ways to reduce waste and increase recycling.
12.  Assist with event preparation and monitoring for at least one zero waste event.
13.  Complete other projects as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS:

Eureka Recycling is seeking a self-directed, organized individual with strong written and verbal communication skills, who is interested in participating in community-based efforts to inspire people to reduce waste.

DESCRIPTION:
This intern will support the customer relations department by assisting with our semi-annual recycled paper cooperative purchasing project, which gives organizations, individuals, and businesses in the Twin Cities area a chance to close the loop by purchasing high quality, 100% postconsumer recycled office paper at a reduced cost. This intern will coordinate communication for the Fall 2010 order, including emails, fact sheets, website updates, as well as tracking all orders and maintaining contact with customers to guarantee delivery or pick-up. Input of recycled paper co-op data to a contact management database will also be a portion of this work. In addition, this intern will assist with other customer relations projects.

RESPONSIBILITIES:
1.  Work with staff to coordinate the fall recycled paper cooperative project including determining local suppliers and prices, promoting the program, tracking customers and orders, monitoring inventory, making pickup and delivery arrangements with customers and writing a summary of the project. Work with program staff to make decisions about the project and offer input for the future of the paper cooperative.
2.  Organize and prepare customer data (using MS Excel and Access) for contact management.
3.  Coordinate mailings and perform general office duties (photocopying, assemble handouts, data entry, assist with mailings) as needed to complete above responsibilities.
4.  Assist with event preparation and monitoring for at least one zero-waste event, and if necessary, participate in sorting waste or conducting visual audits to help identify ways to reduce waste and increase recycling.
5.  Attend staff trainings on recycling issues when possible.
6.  Complete other projects as assigned.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
1.  Interest in environmental studies, marketing, communication, business, community outreach or related field.
2.  Experience in organizing projects and demonstrated ability to carry out tasks in a timely and efficient manner.

DESCRIPTION:
Eureka Recycling has launched an intensive composting initiative in the Macalester-Groveland neighborhood in Saint Paul to encourage people to Make Dirt, Not Waste by composting. Eureka Recycling is working with community partners to help residents reduce their waste in a variety of ways—from reducing the amount of food they waste, to starting a backyard composting bin, to other innovative ways of helping people compost, such a curbside collection, drop-off sites and more.

Eureka Recycling is seeking an individual who is outgoing and organized with strong communication and research skills. This internship is ideal for a person interested in researching and organizing information to feed into an education campaign that is designed to inspire people to take action. This intern is a member of Eureka Recycling’s compost project team and may require some evening and weekend hours to be able to connect with community members.

RESPONSIBILITIES: 
1.  Conduct internet research on methods to reduce food waste through better storage, proportions, and shopping methods, as well as identify tools that can be developed to share this information with others.
2.  Gather feedback (face-to-face or over the phone) via questionnaires to gather information about people’s attitudes and challenges with composting and their reactions to workshops and training. Compile and analyze feedback from questionnaires and workshop evaluations.
3.  Assist with website updates, email blasts, phone calls, etc. to engage composters. Maintain systems to follow up with composters (phone calls, photos, questionnaires, website, Facebook, etc.) and track their feedback.
4.  Work with a team to develop strategies to effectively build a community of composters. Research possible partnerships, events, networks, etc.
5.  Research issues related to composting as directed, such as home composting methods, soils, etc.
6.  Participate in sorting waste to help identify ways to reduce waste and increase recycling & composting.
7.  Assist with special projects as assigned, which may include assisting with event preparation and monitoring for at least one zero-waste event and participating in sorting waste to help identify ways to reduce waste and increase recycling.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
1.  Strong communication skills and ability to effectively articulate ideas and concepts through public speaking, written communication and individual conversations and correspondence.     
2.  Good listening and documentation skills. Comfort talking with residents regularly to answer and ask questions and follow-up.
3.  Ability to interact respectfully with diverse groups of people in a variety of settings.
