RECYCLING COLLECTION DRIVER

JOB TITLE: Recycling Collection Driver
REPORTS TO: Director of Operations
STARTING SALARY: $15.00-17.00/hr. commensurate with experience

BACKGROUND:  Eureka Recycling is a nonprofit organization serving Saint Paul and the Twin Cities area residents and businesses. Its purpose is to provide cutting-edge waste reduction and recycling information, services and programs that provide the greatest environmental results and are economically sustainable. Eureka Recycling's current programs directly serve 114,000 single- and multi-family households and municipal and community buildings in the city of Saint Paul. Eureka Recycling’s recycling facility is located at 2828 Kennedy Street N.E. in Minneapolis (near 280 and Broadway Ave NE).

GENERAL DESCRIPTION: To perform manual labor in collecting recyclables from residences and buildings in Saint Paul, recording route data, providing excellent customer service, hauling to a material recovery facility and tipping at the material recovery facility.

JOB RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Operates an International chassis equipped with Labrie Top-Select body for the collection of recyclable materials from residential homes and various building locations and transports it for recycling to a material recovery facility (MRF).
- Follows a scheduled or authorized modified route as required.
- Operates a two-way radio to communicate with and receive instructions from a supervisor or dispatcher.
- Responsible for performing daily pre-trip and post-trip inspections of vehicle and performs minor maintenance such as monitoring fluid levels, checking for leaks, vehicle lighting, belts, air brake system function, tire pressure and other functions necessary for safe and efficient operation, recording results on  Vehicle Condition Reports (VCR’s).
- Responsible for washing and cleaning interior of vehicle as required.
Reports malfunctions and repair requirements to fleet maintenance personnel and record on VCR.
- Tag containers to inform customers of issues involving their set-out of recyclables.
- Fill out and turn in driver reports and VCR’s every day, and fill out driver hour logs.
- Keep informed of road and weather conditions.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
- Provide customer service in a professional and respectful manner when dealing with the public.
- Responsible for communicating accidents, incidents and injuries immediately to your supervisor, as well as completing all necessary reports.

QUALIFICATIONS:  
- Valid Class B Commercial driver's license with air brake endorsement.
- Clean driving record. Applicants are subject to approval by employer’s insurance company for coverage. Must be 25 years of age or older.
- Medical exams are part of the qualification requirements to get a Commercial Driver's License.
- Reliable vehicle to get back and forth to work.
- Drivers must take an annual medical exam to keep their license.
- Pre-employment medical exams and pre-employment mandatory drug testing is required prior to employment. Subject to all DOT requirements for the operation of straight bodied vehicles with a GVW of 33,000 lbs.
 
EXPERIENCE:
- Minimum 1 year driving a Class B commercial vehicle with air brakes.
- Experience driving the above on city streets and within residential neighborhoods while making multiple stops, tight turns and/or backing up.
- Knowledge of the city of Saint Paul’s roads.
- Residential recycling or garbage collection experience preferred.

SKILLS AND ABILITIES:
- Good communication via a two-way radio
- Legible handwriting
- Ability to keep records of relevant route data
- Observe legal and defensive driving practices.
- Work courteously and tactfully with customers and employees.
- Effective communication skills in English.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
- Outdoor work environment; regular exposure to fumes, dust and odors
- Subject to seasonal and adverse weather conditions
- Subject to noise from equipment operation
- Must drive a vehicle to conduct work.
- Must perform heavy physical labor; lifting and carrying heavy objects
- Will be required to sit for extended periods of time
- Must climb in and out of truck; bending at the waist; reaching overhead, above the shoulders and horizontally; carrying; pushing and pulling.
- Need to be able to lift 50 pounds.
- Must have dexterity of hands and fingers to operate a variety of buttons and levers; and use of feet to control pedals on equipment.

Internships at Eureka Recycling


Eureka Recycling has an organization-wide commitment to hosting interns. Our board, presidents, and staff recognize the enthusiasm, talent, and results that interns bring to our organization and are dedicated to providing students with meaningful work experience. We have hosted 49 interns since 2000. Our internship program is overseen by a designated staff person and includes a formal orientation and training, written workplans, mid-internships meetings with other interns, exit interviews, and evaluations with interns. Our internship program is grounded in a project-based model in which our intern workplans are centered on meaningful projects that directly impact the work of our organization.

COMMUNICATIONS INTERN

BACKGROUND: Eureka Recycling is a local, nonprofit organization that specializes in recycling and waste reduction. Eureka Recycling believes that waste is preventable, not inevitable, and provides cutting-edge, economically sustainable programs that serve the Twin Cities metro area, including the Twin Cities Free Market, the Recycled Products Co-op, event recycling, compost workshops, and more. Eureka Recycling’s services, program and advocacy efforts are designed to be cost-effective while ensuring the greatest environmental benefits. In 2009, Eureka Recycling is actively working to create a movement of individuals, organization, businesses, and governments that understand the benefits of composting and its important role in achieving zero waste.

DESCRIPTION: Eureka Recycling is a community based organization that values the importance of building and maintaining relationships with large and diverse groups of people and organizations. In order to effectively maintain these relationships, communicate the necessary messages, and engage the community/partners in the work that needs to be done to reach a zero-waste future, Eureka Recycling’s informational and contact lists need improvement and organization. The communications intern will work with the communication teams to gather current contact information, help identify potential partners, such as elected officials, media outlets, environmental organizations and community groups to connect with, as well as manage vital informational lists that are used for the curbside and apartment recycling program, advocacy and policy work, and cross departmental education, outreach and program work. 

Additional responsibilities would include managing the interaction people have with Eureka Recycling’s website and developing new ways for people to connect to Eureka Recycling via its new Facebook page.

Eureka Recycling is seeking an organized, detailed-oriented individual with strong verbal communication skills to provide assistance to the communications department staff. This internship is ideal for a student who is interested in helping with the behind the scenes processes and organization that allows for Eureka Recycling to engage and inform important political and community groups, as well as individuals, the media and recyclers, to further Eureka Recycling’s zero-waste mission.

RESPONSIBILITIES
1.  Work with various teams to develop up-to-date, complete contact lists for various projects and programs. This intern will have a prioritized “list of lists” to work on throughout the internship.
2.  Conduct internet and phone research to complete contact lists. Work with all staff to obtain, classify and enter new contacts into contact lists.
3.  Under the direction of the communication managers, use the completed contact lists to disseminate information to engage and inform our constituents on various program and topics. Learn and use email newsletter software.
4.  Work with city contacts (predominately from the City of Maplewood) to obtain mailing list information. Make recommendation for the necessary site research and conduct site research to confirm mailing addresses.
5.  Make recommendations for Eureka Recycling’s contact management database based on experience working with contact lists.
6.  Perform general office duties (filing, mailings, photocopies, etc.) as needed to complete above responsibilities.
7.  Attend staff trainings on recycling issues when possible.
8.  Assist with special projects as needed, which may include assisting with event preparation and monitoring for at least one zero-waste event and participating in sorting waste to help identify ways to reduce waste and increase recycling.

QUALIFICATIONS
1.  Computer skills: proficiency in Microsoft Word, Excel, and internet (Outlook).
(No graphic design, database, or web development software knowledge is necessary.)
2.  Excellent attention to detail
3.  Demonstrated organization skills. Ability to prioritize and meet deadlines.
4.  Good verbal communication skills.

Driven by a mission to demonstrate that waste is preventable, not inevitable, Eureka Recycling’s services, programs, and advocacy efforts are designed to be cost-effective while ensuring the greatest environmental benefits. For over 20 years, it has provided model, award-winning curbside and apartment recycling collection and processing services, education, and advocacy.

Eureka Recycling is seeking an energetic, assertive, and articulate individual. This entry-level internship is ideal for someone looking to gain experience working in a nonprofit organization and is interested in learning more about recycling, environmental issues, speech and/or communicating with diverse groups of people.

POSITION DESCRIPTION: The customer relations team is responsible for building and maintaining relationships with all of Eureka Recycling’s partners, including residents, cities, counties and other businesses and organizations. The Customer Relations Intern will provide support for this team by assisting staff in a variety of tasks to meet their objectives and by coordinating projects at the administrative level. This intern will work in a variety of areas, including communications, customer service, reporting and administration.

The customer relations intern will also be trained to answer Eureka Recycling’s hotline to educate residents about the environmental impacts of their personal choices. Eureka Recycling’s environmental hotline is a well-established customer relations program of the organization that answers over 60,000 calls each year. The hotline team responds to questions from the public and communicates about existing, new, and ever-changing waste reduction services, programs, and issues that impact people’s ability to take action to benefit the environment. This intern will work with other members of the Eureka Recycling team to strengthen the resources and information systems that are used to build relationships with the diverse group of people that call the hotline.

RESPONSIBILITIES
1.  Support customer relations staff by updating internal resources and information.
2.  Accurately answer Ramsey County residential recycling and solid waste and Eureka recycling’s waste reduction hotline, mail relevant literature to callers, disseminate information to community groups, and provide information to Eureka Recycling staff.
3.  Read city and county maps with speed and accuracy.
4.  Provide staff support services by taking messages, directing calls, and sending out mailings.
5.  Help create and maintain accurate internal and external information, tracking and reporting systems, and up-to-date literature.
6.  Coordinate mailing of educational materials to residents, property managers, donors,  community organizations, etc.
7.  Assist with office and administrative tasks as needed to complete above responsibilities.
8.  Assist with special projects as needed, which may include assisting with event preparation and monitoring for at least one zero-waste event and participating in sorting waste to help identify ways to reduce waste and increase recycling.

QUALIFICATIONS
1.  Demonstrated ability to work scheduled hours and arrive on time.
2.  Strong communication skills including the ability to express concepts through individual conversations.
3.  Ability to interact respectfully with diverse groups of people in a variety of settings.
4.  Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
5.  Interest in environmental and community issues.
6.  Ability to keep detailed, legible, and accurate reports and notes.
7.  Proficient computer skills including Microsoft Office (word processing, spreadsheets) and Internet and e-mail proficiency. Access database skills a plus.
8.  Reliable transportation. Mileage will be reimbursed for work-related travel (this does not include travel to and from work).

Eureka Recycling’s services, program and advocacy efforts are designed to be cost-effective while ensuring the greatest environmental benefits.

Eureka Recycling is seeking an energetic, assertive and articulate individual to provide an assortment of services to Eureka Recycling staff. This entry-level internship is ideal for someone who is looking to gain experience in occupational health and safety- including OSHA certification, environmental health policy or safety engineering, facility operations or work in the nonprofit sector.

POSITION DESCRIPTION: The Health and Safety Intern will work with the Safety Lead and the Director of Operations to evaluate occupational health and environmental safety programs for Eureka Recycling’s Material Recovery Facility (MRF) and fleet and administrative staff to ensure compliance with applicable regulations. This intern will assist in the development and coordination of activities to prevent or correct unsafe working conditions by following industrial health and safety laws, specifically set by the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) and Department of Transportation (DOT).

RESPONSIBILITIES
1.  Serve as technical assistant to Safety Lead and staff regarding environmental safety management issues, providing research and coordinating projects as assigned.
2.  Develop training and educational packets for environmental safety trainings for staff.
3.  Work on assigned programs including, but not limited to, recycling collection and processing safety, occupational safety and hygiene, environmental programs, fire safety and ergonomics as assigned.
4.  Compile, analyze, and report data to help in assessing regulatory compliance. 
5.  Assess occupational and environmental safety hazards and effectiveness of controls and hazard reduction potential.
6.  Provide specialized technical support in periodic evaluations of work environments to ensure compliance with applicable laws and regulations.
7.  Prepare reports of inspections, observations and analysis.
8.  Perform other related duties as assigned to support operations.
9.  Attend staff trainings on recycling issues when possible.
10.  Assist with special projects as needed, which may include assisting with event preparation and monitoring for at least one zero-waste event and participating in sorting waste to help identify ways to reduce waste and increase recycling.

QUALIFICATIONS
1.  Related education or training in occupational health and safety, OSHA certification, or  environmental health policy. Work experience preferred but not required.
